We know that hobbies and traditions are a huge part of a happy childhood, and often serve as the glue that cements family relationships. We love doing things together as a family and try to make those activities a regular part of our lives.
Camping together as a family is one of our most significant family traditions. We go several times a year, both by ourselves and with extended family. At least once a year we have a family reunion camp-out with all of Norm's family. The cousins love the opportunity to have several days playing together and the freedom to spend time outdoors.
We have enjoyed a variety of activities on these camping trips, including river rafting, 4-wheeling, fishing, and boating. The opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and beauty of nature is something we feel is essential to our family.
Another tradition we have is a yearly vacation. These range from very simple to more elaborate, but we try to at least have one vacation each year. Every few years we plan a trip to Alaska to spend time with Jennifer's parents. One year we went there for Christmas, and Jennifer's family had the fun opportunity to celebrate Christmas with Jeremy. This doesn't happen very often since they live so far from us, but it was a very special Christmas for all of us, and we hope to do it again. Other times we have gone to visit in the summer, and have enjoyed fishing, hiking, and touring around the beautiful state of Alaska. We've also gone on trips touring National Parks, touring Church history sites, and Norm's favorite -- attending NASCAR races.
Some of the more simple things we do as a family include reading bedtime stories and scriptures, going out to dinner every few weeks, and visiting Norm at work to eat lunch with him. We regularly spend time with friends, and will usually get together for dinner and a movie so all the kids get a chance to play together. Sometimes Jeremy and I will plan various play dates where he gets to spend the afternoon playing with his friends while their mom and I supervise, visit with each other, and work on projects. Each of us usually has a sewing, scrapbooking, or genealogy project in the works, so it is a good time to work on that.
